School Council members, and their school principals, are invited to join Alberta School Councils Association (ASCA) to learn about the school council’s role in the Alberta Education Assurance Framework. The assurance model creates new opportunities for parents to engage with the education system and help shape local priorities and initiatives  surrounding the development of school and School Board education plan priorities.

The Assurance Framework, introduced with the Weighted Moving Average Funding Model in February of 2020 and implemented provincially in September 2020, is designed to demonstrate to Albertans that the education system is meeting student needs and that students are successful. Using this Framework, which was successfully piloted in a handful of school divisions over a 5 – 6 year period, all education partners share the responsibility of student growth  - including parents and School Councils!

What does this mean for parents and School Councils?

The Assurance Framework is based on the importance of stakeholder engagement (i.e., parents on School Councils) in a more meaningful planning process. School boards are responsible for the engagement of the parents of their students, and to provide the opportunity for School Council engagement / involvement in developing the education plan, results report, and other items critical to student success. Principals are often expected create similar opportunities specific to the local context of their own school communities.

The big questions for parents and School Councils are:

1)       What do I/we need to be doing?

2)       Why do I/we need to be doing it?

3)       How am I/are we going to do it?

This is for Peace River School Division School Council Members only.  If you are interested in the event and would like to create a learning opportunity for your school council please contact us at nrlcstaff@gppsd.ab.ca
