This is an introductory, practical learning session to support Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers in the
implementation of the new ELA foundational literacy curriculum to equip students for reading success. The
focus will be on how to develop these key foundational skills:
  • phonological awareness - spoken word, rhyming, alliteration, onset-rime, syllables
  • phonemic awareness skills - phoneme identification, isolation, blending, segmenting, and manipulation
  • phonics skills - letter formation, letter/sound association, decoding (sounding out)
  • orthographic mapping - encoding (spelling); word memory retrieval
