About the Session:

TARGET AUDIENCE: K-9 Teacher and Educational Assistants

Why ‘learn from the land’? Why learn through an Indigenous lens? What are the benefits of our students engaging in writing about ‘learning from the land’?  Join us to seek answers to these questions and gain practical hands-on’ strategies and approaches you can utilize with your students. Explore ways to encourage deeper thinking and discover supports for both students and teachers to engage in land-based learning.


About the Presenter(s):
Denise Peterson

was born and raised in farming, ranching community in south-eastern Alberta, and currently resides in Strathmore Alberta with her husband Roger Nelson. Together they have 5 children and 11 grandchildren. Denise works as an Educational Consultant and is involved in a local family business. She is serving in her third term as Councillor for the Town.

In 1994, while teaching and administrating in Golden Hills School Division, she petitioned to open an outreach school in Strathmore. In 2003 she was invited to open another outreach school in partnership with the Siksika Nation. Over the next 18 years Denise worked with Siksika in partnership to create the first on-reserve outreach school in Canada. Siksika Outreach has been acknowledged as a Federal school of best practice. She also sat as a Governor for Old Sun Community College.

Her most treasured recognition was being the beneficiary of a ‘Blackfoot Naming Ceremony and becoming a tipi holder. In 2007 she was granted the Premier’s Award for Excellence in Educational Innovation. Denise has been a featured public speaker at local, national and international venues and is gratified and humbled to participate in this CRC endeavor.
