Digital Citizenship is an increasingly important part of our lives. While we cannot anticipate the technology of the future, it is crucial to equip our students with the mindset and skill set, with which to approach technology as a normalized part of our twenty-first century lives.
This course will equip you with ideas, resources, and examples to discuss digital citizenship in the classroom. It will help facilitate the nurturing of our students’ curiosities about different aspects of technology - whether technological machinations, the social impact of technology on our workforce, privacy and security, or the potential for lifelong learning that exists in the ever-evolving technology that surrounds us. The approach is based on Alberta Education Student Competencies as identified in the Ministerial Order on Student Learning (#001/2013), namely; Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Collaboration, Managing Information, Cultural and Global Citizenship, Creativity and Innovation and Personal Growth and Well-Being. It is also informed by Alberta Education’s Learning and Technology Policy Framework, which emphasises the importance of a learning environment that is innovative but also student-centred and authentic.
is an educator with several years’ experience in different aspects of communication, STEM and education. She is most excited about spaces where technology meets pedagogy and is an advocate for balance in today’s increasingly digital world. In the classroom, Sue has been both Ed-Tech specialist and core subject teacher, and she understands the challenge faced by today’s students, who have some technology know-how but not always critical thinking mindsets to navigate these powerful tools. She enjoys being curious and facilitating knowledge sharing for teachers and students around the areas of digital citizenship, computational thinking and our global world. Sue currently teaches at Rundle College.
