About the Session:

This session has been developed for our working professional teachers and leaders who wish to reach a deep understanding about the underpinnings of the Julie Stern book - Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding (Elementary or Secondary)  

The learning experience will include:

  • Three online meetings via Zoom
    • May 19/20 - Michele Jones
    • May 26/20 - Michele Jones & Julie Stern
    • June 2/20  - Michele Jones
  • A google classroom for online discussions and reflections

Meetings will focus on:

  • discussions brought forward by participants and
  • provocations for participants to work through to supplement the learning experience between the sessions

Pre-reading Requirements:

Day 1 - Ch. 1 & 2

Day 2 - Ch. 3 & 4

Day 3 - Ch. 5 - 7

 

About the Presenter(s):
Michele Jones

Michele  is the lead consultant for curriculum implementation and wellness education for the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium. Michele’s work involves supporting schools, school authorities and our seven partner organizations in transforming teaching and learning with a focus on student achievement. Her depth and breadth of knowledge combined with her work in multiple contexts and her contagious energy make her a great choice for leading professional learning opportunities.

Julie Stern

Julie Stern is the author of Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding. She is a teacher trainer and instructional coach, supporting educators in breaking free of the long-standing industrial model of schooling. Julie is a certified trainer in Visible Learning and Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction. She is a James Madison Constitutional Scholar and taught social studies for many years. She is a Verified Master Trainer and has Coaching and Change Management Certificates from the Association for Talent Development (ATD). Julie previously served as the director of Curriculum Innovation for a network of schools in Washington, DC.

Registration Notes:

Participants are required to have a copy of “Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding ” Elementary or Secondary , and have read the prerequisite chapters prior to the book study sessions. 

Northwest Regional Learning Consortium (NRLC) has a  limited number of “Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding ” Elementary available for sale and pick-up, by appointment, on site at our office in Grande Prairie.

Should participants wish to purchase a book from the NRLC, please contact nrlcstaff@gppsd.ab.ca  to set up an appointment for purchase and pick-up. Participants will need to supply exact cash or cheque amount of $45.00 and pick up will need to follow social/physical distancing protocols.

NRLC will not be unable to ship books to participants due to limitations of our office during COVID-19.   

Copies of “Tools for Teaching Conceptual Understanding ” Elementary or Secondary are available on Amazon in hard copy or digital copy for Kindle.
