Now more than ever, we need to prepare students to solve complex problems. The secret is conceptual understanding and a focus on learning transfer. This interactive workshop demonstrates practical ways teachers can begin to build the schema in students’ brains that facilitates deeper understanding and the ability to unlock complex problems through learning transfer. Receive feedback on your plans and have time for Q and A with Julie.

Learning Intentions:

  • Investigate the role of conceptual understanding in retrieval of information, depth of understanding, and transfer of learning.
  • Understand that transfer is both a means and an end.
  • Examine the importance of quality thinking and metacognition in transfer of learning.
  • Utilize online learning to foster conceptual understanding and learning transfer

Session 1: In this session we will investigate the role of conceptual understanding in retrieval of information, depth of understanding, and transfer of learning. We will plan specific ways to foster conceptual understanding to apply immediately, even in an online learning environment.

Session 2: We will reflect on the implementation of our application from session 1 and explore the idea that transfer is both an end goal and a way to deepen learning. We will plan specific ways to plan for simple transfer of learning, even in an online learning environment.

Session 3: Using specific strategies ourselves that we can use directly with students, we will reflect on the quality of our thinking and metacognition in our own application of conceptual understanding and learning transfer. We will plan next steps for facilitating more complex transfer with our students.
