This cross Jurisdictional cohort is open to reflective practitioners be they teachers, coaches, substitute teachers, administrators. Educators who participate tell us the conversations are deep and provocative, the rich activities prompt cognitive and pedagogical shifts and the opportunities to learn from and with colleagues inspiring and re energizing. As the province prepares for future curriculum, this group will make clear what it means to teach, plan and assess from a CONCEPT-BASED approach to curriculum.
Participants in the cohort can expect to further their understandings of, and ability to demonstrate to others, ways to integrate literacy, numeracy and the competencies into their planning for instruction and assessment. In this cohort, participants are challenged to identify and start from math concepts then plan out to connect to literacy, competencies and other disciplines.
During the cohort days, participants analyze samples of student work with specific attention to identifying, supporting and sustaining the development of thinking, communicating and reasoning across all the grades. We tackle the question: what is math reasoning and how do we develop and evaluate it?
It is an expectation that participants bring insights, artifacts, video and student work to the meetings, (to be shared across jurisdictions and onto the EMPLO site) and are prepared to use those artifacts to build assessments. It is an expectation that participants take back and share with their colleagues and students reflections and insights from what they are learning.
** Studying mathematics through a concept based approach means we must understand how to help students build and maintain basic math skills. The cohort will include in their study a Numeracy diagnostic, developed to specifically align to Alberta curriculum. This diagnostic is changing how teachers understand and are able to embed attention to recall and retention of basic facts into their daily teaching.

Participants may register for the entire series or individual sessions. Please bring your own coffee or tea to the event. Lunch is provided.
Geri Lorway does not promote or support “discovery learning”. She promotes and supports teaching children how to think, how to reason and problem solve, how to comprehend and communicate both written and oral language in grade appropriate ways, how to use their visual spatial skills to learn, recall and apply FACTS.

Geri's career in education spans more than 35 years. She has taught in single & multi grade classrooms, been a principal, a District Principal, a District Consultant and currently continue as a University Professor, action researcher, coach and mentor to teachers, parents and students across Western Canada. As she works in classrooms across the province, her knowledge and understanding evolves. Teaching is change because learning is change.
Participants will be required to report to the NRLC how/when they shared their knowledge and led professional development with colleagues based in their learning during the cohort meetings.
