This “workshop” is set up as a series of 3 days.
The sessions will be supported with an online space for sharing. If you pay for the series but cannot participate in some of the days ,you can still be connected to the work and learning. You can still receive the tasks.
Each day follows a similar format. You will be introduced to, and have time to discuss, practice, become confident with a set of number sense tasks to take to your classroom. The tasks build the number sense that forms the foundation for key skills and concepts at your grade level.
Number sense comes before number facts. It encompasses a set of skills that impact their success across all grades and topics. When students lack a strong sense of number they have trouble learning, connecting and remembering number facts, remembering and applying algorithms, working with place value, fractions, decimals, and they are unable to apply strategies to know if their solutions to problems are reasonable. • NMAP, page 27, March 2008
Each day has a classroom observation session built in. We will follow up the observation with a discussion on how to use the built in rubrics for evaluation and reporting. Each day will focus on a different set of tasks and ways to track and assess student success. The tasks have differentiation built right in.
Take the tasks to your classroom, work with your students and bring back samples, concerns, adaptations to share with the group. Many teachers have been surprised to learn that the impact on student learning spreads beyond just improving number facts. Comprehension, problem solving, measurement, even reading and writing skills improve.
Number sense is not a topic for September, it can and should be woven into your year. “Number sense” is at the heart of numeracy comes before facts can be mastered and firmly connects to literacy.
