This session is for those who are new to or would like a refresher on working with a student with complex communication needs (CCN). A child/adolescent with CCN does not develop speech and language skills as expected due to motor, language, cognitive, and/or sensory perceptual impairments that may result from developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome. These children/adolescents may be non-speaking or have limited verbal output and cannot communicate in conventional ways. Our CCN students typically experience restricted access to the environment, limited interactions with their communication partners, and few opportunities for communication (Light, 1997). Alternate and augmentative communication (AAC) systems/strategies offer potential tools to meet their communication needs.

Morning session: The session will teach you how to support students with CCN communication needs at school. We will introduce the concept of Aided Language Stimulation and core vocabulary as well discuss different AAC strategies/ systems including low tech (i.e., core boards) and high tech (proloquo2go, Touch Chat etc.) AAC options.

Afternoon session: The focus will be hands on practice with topics covered in the morning session. We understand that implementation is still a barrier to success, so come work with a variety of SLPs and have hands on learning with activities we find successful. If possible, we ask that everyone bring their student’s no/low/high tech AAC system as we will be using this time to practice (e.g. iPad with app, PODD book, or core board). There will be centers set up with activities, toys, and games that are typically found in schools.  SLPs will be available to demonstrate aided language stimulation (modelling) using core words, examples of lesson plans, other topics covered throughout the year, as well as answer any questions and problem solve difficulties.

This session is applicable even if your student does not currently have or use an AAC device. We will discuss affordable low-tech strategies that can be implemented immediately after the session.

Please join us for this session and help our students start communicating!

Other: This is a repeat session of the series provided by Peace Collaborative Services in the 2017/18 school year.
