In order to succeed and excel in Grade 4/5 mathematics students must understand multiplication and how it forms the foundation for knowing how to divide, work with fractions, work with decimals, use a variety of measuring tools to calculate and report accurate measurement including perimeter, area, and volumes. In fact virtually every outcome in Grade 4 to 6 can be linked to multiplicative reasoning.
The models, tools and techniques participants will study and practice over the course of these two days align with the most current research on instruction and assessment. Make no mistake: the student learning goal is mastery with multiplication and division facts.
However knowing the facts is not enough. Students must know how to relate the facts to number properties. Learning to think as you learn to recall and apply multiplication facts is the Critical Outcome.
October 4:
We will focus specifically on Number Sense, Common Sense and how to teach the multiplication and division facts in a way that promotes and sustains lasting recall. Invest the time to truly teach the BASICS, then build ten minutes of focused practice into your daily routine. Students will know their facts.
The materials package includes BERCS Cards matched to student practice sheets and student problems Assessment criteria listed in student friendly language accompany them.
Throughout the materials and the day, we will make references to the Student Competencies, the Literacy and Numeracy progressions and ways to infuse key comprehension, word attack, reading and writing skills into your math lessons.
February 15
Our focus moves to the critical role that measurement plays in learning, remembering, applying and understanding number, number operations and number facts. Measurement in Grade 4 to 6 is a multiplicative function. The materials package will include BERCS CARDS matched to student practice sheets and problems that include assessment criteria listed in student friendly language all focused on the importance of understanding how to reason and think in measurement contexts.
This day is intended to convince participants that teaching “measurement” early and well can support students’ success with PLACE VALUE and RECALL of basic facts.
