Disciplinary literacy (DL) may be the latest educational buzzword, but what does it actually mean for teachers who are preparing lessons, teaching increasingly complex content, addressing students’ social-emotional needs and trying to stay on top of new initiatives?  In a nutshell, it should be an approach that supports deep, conceptual learning as students participate as apprentices in each discipline by utilizing the specific literacy tools of that content-area. Join ReLeah Cossett Lent, author of two books and numerous articles on disciplinary literacy, for a series of engaging sessions where participants explore the principles of DL along with related activities that can be adapted to any content area.

In the collaborative second session, participants will dive deeper into disciplinary literacy practices by examining how learning from the first session translated into lessons and classroom practices.  With ReLeah as a guide, teachers will reflect on how DL can be creatively expanded to provide a solid foundation for moving toward a more inquiry-based, active approach to teaching and learning. These sessions will provide time for talk, space for risk-taking, and respect for every teacher’s content knowledge. Handouts and resources will be provided, but it is recommended that every participant has a copy of This is Disciplinary Literacy: Reading, Writing, Thinking and Doing. . .Content Area by Content Area.
