The Flipped Classroom

Course Code:

Greater Peace Fall ATA PD Day

Peace River, AB – October 17, 2011

PM Session: Div 3 & 4 The Flipped Classroom (all subject areas)

Facilitator: Jonathon Groff

As a teacher who has an aversion to sending students home with homework, I have struggled with finding time to provide instruction and allow ample time for working.  As well, I understand and sympathize with students who either pick up on a concept quickly and get bored with the prolonged examples and explanations, or those who still feel lost after a mini-lecture.  The flipped classroom involves students learning concepts for homework and using class time to practice those skills and work on their projects.  The name, “The Flipped Classroom” refers not only to flipping the traditional learning structure of the classroom, but also to the innovative way of engaging students in their homework—using a flip-camera to deliver the lesson as a YouTube video.  This session will explore the notion of the flipped classroom, and seek to answer some common questions teachers have:  What do I do if I don’t have a flip-camera? (I don’t) What if my students don’t have internet access?  Doesn’t this take a lot of time to create a lesson?  We will collaborate as a group and come up with alternatives and solutions to make this work in our own classrooms.  Depending on the interests and capabilities of attendees, we may be able to actually give this a try during the session.  My morning session, “Integrating Technology Into Your ELA/Humanities Classroom” will discuss many technological tools that will make “the flipped classroom” easier to achieve.  BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) If you have a smartphone, laptop, or ipad, bring it with you.
